Cris Novich, Managing Director of Full Tilt Transportation, recently participated in a three-person expert panel discussing supply chain issues effecting the global, national, and local economies. The event was sponsored by the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) organization and brought together experts to discuss supply chain issues.
The worldwide supply chain has been severely disrupted due to several factors including supply chain shortcomings, increased fuel costs, winter weather and COVID. The phenomena has been called The Everything Shortage and has resulted in product scarcity and increased prices. It’s also spurned innovation in utilizing alternate sources and a movement from offshoring to onshoring.
The panelists discussed the current state of the supply chain and what they predict for the immediate and long-term future of the shipping and delivery market. Audience participation included many questions and comments. Full Tilt Logistics and Transportation continues to be an innovative and forward thinking industry leader that customers look to for solutions.

The peak season for logistics companies is near and this year we’re noticing new logistics insights and supply chain trends. While consumption of products continues to increase, the need for reliable logistics and transportation is more present than ever within the supply chain. However, there are several obstacles that present themselves this season that are hindering many logistics companies’ ability to deliver.
Full Tilt Logistics has been closely following these supply chain trends and logistics insights to fully prepare for the work ahead. Take a look below to learn more about our findings.
The supply chain trends of the 2021 peak season are somewhat different than what was expected originally. While it is true that eCommerce and in-store shopping are projected to continue increasing throughout the holiday shopping season as is true of previous trends, the peak season itself is likely going to shift. In past years, the peak season typically sees its height around Black Friday. However, in 2021, roughly 25% of consumers claim that they plan to have their holiday shopping done before Black Friday, shifting the peak of the season to be earlier than anticipated.
Another supply chain trend we’re noticing is the growing backlog of container ships being held offshore. In 2020, the U.S. ports held their worst historical numbers of backlogged ships and though many people believed this would improve, the backlog has only continued to accrue more vessels. More than 100 ships were backlogged in October off the ports of Southern California, waiting to be unloaded. To fully clear this up, there would need to be a hold on all incoming vessels for about 2 weeks — a feat likely to never occur.
Challenges in logistics faced during peak season vary, but the most prominent we’ve seen thus far include the strict California regulations and taxes on logistics distributions, historically high fuel and insurance costs, inclement weather impeding the ability to safely travel, and finally, the nationwide labor shortage.
Doing business in California as part of the supply chain is not an easy task. California taxes and regulations significantly limit transportation opportunities in and out of the state. Take, for example, California’s state fuel tax rate which sits at 62.5 cents per gallon while the national average is at just 24.4 cents per gallon.
Fuel costs have risen significantly in the past year for both gas and diesel. Diesel fuel itself is up 57% from 2020. With the ever-changing fuel efficiency standards occurring in the nation, we’re bound to see costs continue to rise. Similarly, insurance costs are getting out of hand as well. With the cost of insurance going up, trucking companies are held responsible for more liability than ever before which drives up costs.
During the second quarter of 2021, more than 25% of open job positions were in the logistics industry. The biggest issue with this is that logistics require nearly 3x the labor force than traditional warehouses. With the demand for transportation being higher than the labor capacity allows, it’s evident that a large number of drivers are still needed and this number is likely to continue growing with the supply chain trends.
As it stands right now, roughly 110,000 drivers will need to be hired each year to keep up with the demand. Unfortunately, driver retention and recruitment continue to pose a constant threat to logistics businesses.
To operate a successful logistics company, your team must show exemplary problem-solving skills and strategic competency. As a knowledgeable logistics company with experience with almost every type of shipment there is and that includes winter freight shipping, we continue to lean into the situation and grow the company regardless of the challenges. With tested processes, robust technology, and talented professionals, we’re confident in our ability to navigate this peak season and deliver top-notch service.

People often use logistics and distribution synonymously, but these two terms actually have considerable differences in the supply chain industry. While the two are both necessary for moving goods or products, they both provide different functions in the supply chain management process. For instance, logistics focuses on creating a strategic plan for moving goods, while distribution executes the transportation of such goods using thoughtful strategies. So, what is logistics and distribution? Take a look below to learn more!
Logistics refers to the planning, design, coordination, and management needed to begin the process of moving goods or products. A distinguishing characteristic of logistics is that it starts from the very beginning of the manufacturing stage of goods, and continues through the delivery of those goods and products to their intended retailers and consumers.
Also, 3PL logistics company requires a significant amount of information to flow through all of its connected servers in order to successfully execute its goal. To illustrate, logistics requires the development of an automated inventory system that allows retailers to sync their 3PL logistics company’s computer systems with their distribution centers. Integrating these two systems will put more automated and expedited processes in place for handling ordering, fulfillment, and transportation of goods or products.
To simplify, logistics is a strategic plan that starts at the beginning and sees it’s way completely through to the end. It’s end goal is to ensure that goods are stored and moved in the most efficient manner possible. Ideally, effective logistics techniques will move products safely and efficiently, in as little time as possible, at the lowest cost possible. This planning process will help improve warehousing and transportation functions so you can meet the needs of your retailer or consumer.
Distribution is one of the key elements used in the supply chain industry. It refers to the process in which a business makes products and plans how they’ll move the products so that they’re available to retailers or consumers. While the distribution process mostly consists of the physical transportation of goods through a specific distribution channel, it also includes the overall strategic plan for executing this action. For example, distribution considers:
Many people see distribution as the simple transportation of goods, but that’s not totally accurate. Distribution is able to provide transportation for goods by focusing on creating a strategic plan that finds the best methods for distributing products efficiently.
While logistics and distribution require strategic planning in order to create effective solutions, there are some differences between these two concepts. For instance, logistics reviews the manufacturing process as a whole. It takes an overall view of the entire process to help improve distribution channels and warehouse management. This ensures the smooth flow of the supply chain and aims to focus primarily on creating effective solutions to accomplish this. On the other hand, distribution serves as a subcategory of logistics that focuses on getting goods delivered as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.

Although Full Tilt Logistics and Full Tilt Transportation are women-owned companies, there is no doubt who the big diesel engines are that power the organizations. Co-owners and brothers Nic and Cris Novich are the drivers of the bus. Everyone has their strengths and lanes of responsibility, but the Novich brothers are truly the leaders of the rapidly growing companies.
These two brothers have been closely connected their entire lives. Nic, the oldest helped found Full Tilt Logistics in 2014 and convinced younger brother Cris to join him in 2017 and create Full Tilt Transportation. The lifelong trust between the brothers cannot be emphasized enough, they have each other’s backs when things get hectic as is usually the case in a freight brokerage, trucking, and transportation business. Although the brothers work closely together operating the two companies, they arrived at this business partnership in different ways.
Older brother Nic runs Full Tilt Logistics. He has worked with several large freight brokerage and transportation companies and was a key contributor in starting two brokerages before founding Full Tilt Logistics in 2014. He has experience and a thorough knowledge of the business. His sales ability and customer service skills are exceptional because he is honest and smart with a healthy dose of common sense. He is a high-energy, whatever it takes to get the job done leader and is the true visionary of the companies. He has always had and still does have a true vision of where Full Tilt will be in ten years, thinking several steps ahead of his business partners and employees. When we think things are going well and running smoothly Nic wonders “what if we did this” or “have you seen the latest technology” or “what if we bought a new building”. Without his knowledge of the industry and continuing to push the envelope, Full Tilt would not be where it is today.
Younger brother Cris runs Full Tilt Transportation. He joined the business in 2017 and was responsible for starting Full Tilt Transportation, the asset-based component of the organizations. Cris is the numbers guy and was a successful Financial Advisor prior to joining the family business. With his leadership, the company has grown to eighteen power units and over forty 53’ dry van trailers. Although decisions must be made quickly, Cris’s planning and organizational skills ensure the company stays on track. Cris can often be found with a phone in each hand and five computer monitors in front of him. He is constantly focused on reducing operating expenses by finding fuel discounts and better insurance rates for the company. He recruits and hires drivers, develops business relationships with existing customers, and sells Full Tilt services to prospective customers.
Nic and Cris's passion and dedication to Full Tilt is always on display and with their leadership, our employee base has grown and we now boast some of the best, well-trained employees in the business. Leading by example, supporting employees and providing them with opportunities to grow with the business have been key in recruiting and maintaining a competent workforce. Employees have the authority and are encouraged to take chances and make decisions to serve the customers' best interests. Nic and Cris are always available to support their employees when they need it. The brothers constantly check in with our customers to see how things are going from their side. In these conversations, we often hear how great it is to work with Full Tilt because customers can always reach an owner for a prompt response to a question or to get a problem solved quickly.
Although the success of Full Tilt is a major part of their lives, maintaining a solid family unit is most important to Nic and Cris. They are both wonderful fathers and husbands and are able to balance work and family effectively. Of course, both of their spouses are also part owners of the companies, so Full Tilt truly is a tight-knit family operation.

Do your homework and ace the test! This doesn't only work well in school, it also applies to business. At Full Tilt Logistics, we do our homework and the results are solid grades from our growing customer base. In the fast-paced logistics and transportation industry, everyone is in a hurry and we get that. As a leader in delivering high value shipments, we have found that spending some time on the front end (homework) leads to better results for our customers (acing the test).
Let’s talk about one segment of our business and describe how we do our homework. We routinely transport time-sensitive, high value shipments like equipment for trade show exhibits and live entertainment events. Because these events are on a tight schedule, they require strict timelines. Generally, we are only given a small window to deliver to the show, pick up from the show, and get to the next event. If mistakes are made or deadlines are missed, it gets expensive. Often union labor is waiting for the freight and if there is a delay, it’s costly. We follow the following procedures to ensure on-time delivery.
For all carriers, we check the carrier’s DOT information through Safer Watch and FMCSA (Federal Carrier Safety Administration). We are looking for excellent safety scores, current insurance, proper operating authority, and TIA Watchdog notifications for any infractions against their company. Any issues, at all, and they are not approved by Full Tilt.
We verify the driver provided by the carrier is the correct driver and has the exact instructions regarding the load. Daily updates from the drivers are required, however, often our dispatch department is in contact with every driver several times a day to accurately determine the status of the load and ensure compliance with the delivery or pick-up schedule.
We thoroughly describe and communicate to the carrier the specific equipment that is required for each shipment. Not only trailer type, but accessories like blanket wraps, straps, load bars, and decking to name a few. We include the equipment list on the rate confirmation to the driver and get verbal agreement over a recorded line to eliminate any misunderstanding. Also, an email confirmation is sent to restate the required equipment again. Full Tilt implements this process to avoid any last minute surprises.
Full Tilt utilizes an ELD (Electronic Logging Device) driver tracking system to make sure drivers have the available hours for on-time pickup and delivery. Driving time is federally regulated and all drivers must follow the law. If drivers are short on time for any time-sensitive high value shipments, they are not approved for the load.
Shipment-specific details are provided to every driver regarding each shipment. Destination contact information, location nuances, and defined pickup and delivery time windows are among the many instructions provided. They are detailed on the rate and load confirmation that the carrier must agree to and sign off on. Failure to meet agreed-upon instructions will result in dollar reductions for the carrier. This is an effective incentive for carriers to do their best to pick up and deliver on time. Any delays may result in catastrophic failures for our customers which is unacceptable. Imagine a major trade show exhibit waiting for material to set up the show.
In addition to these procedures to ensure a great customer experience with no problems, we also have fail-safe procedures in place to recover loads in the case of an emergency. Dedicated Full Tilt equipment, as well as an extensive carrier network, allows us to recover a load at any time.
Full Tilt Logistics is totally transparent to our customers, we communicate regularly with a goal to exceed customer expectations every time. Our philosophy…. do your homework and ace the test. Contact us today!
