There were many recommendations and submissions, and a lot of thought went into selecting the winner. Full Tilt showed their ability to seize the opportunity during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this award is well deserved.”

The Small Business Administration

The U.S. Small Business Administration is a United States government agency that provides support to entrepreneurs and small businesses. The mission of the Small Business Administration is "to maintain and strengthen the nation's economy by enabling the establishment and viability of small businesses and by assisting in the economic recovery of communities after disasters". The agency's activities have been summarized as the "3 Cs" of capital, contracts, and counseling. The U.S. Small Business Administration helps Americans start, build, and grow businesses.

The SBA was created in 1953 as an independent agency of the federal government to aid, counsel, assist, and protect the interests of small business concerns, to preserve free competitive enterprise, and to maintain and strengthen the overall economy of our nation.

SBA has grown significantly in terms of total assistance provided, and its array of programs has been tailored to encourage small enterprises in all areas. SBA's programs now include financial and federal contract procurement assistance, management assistance, and specialized outreach to women, minorities, and armed forces veterans. SBA also provides loans to victims of natural disasters and specialized advice and assistance in international trade.

The U.S. Small Business Administration makes the American dream of business ownership a reality. As the only go-to resource and voice for small businesses backed by the strength of the federal government, the SBA empowers entrepreneurs and small business owners with the resources and support they need to start, grow, or expand their businesses, or recover from a declared disaster. It delivers services through an extensive network of SBA field offices and partnerships with public and private organizations.

Obviously, the past several weeks have had a devastating impact on individuals, families, local and state governments, our national economy, and well-being. Along with the wreckage of the greatest economy in the world, many Americans have experienced a toll on their lives, and related social issues have been significant. No one saw this coming.

The COVID-19 situation has significantly impacted Full Tilt, and we have had to furlough employees and do more with less. Over the last several years, we’ve provided transportation services to many large trade shows, exhibits, and other large events. This year, these events came to an abrupt stop, forcing us to move in other directions and get creative in our ability to navigate through the situation. Many customers have stopped paying, yet we continue to pay our carriers and drivers. How long this will last is uncertain.

Full Tilt Logistics' Positive Impact

On a positive note, we have been able to be part of the solution to keeping critical support services moving through the supply chain. This has been extremely rewarding for our company. In addition to moving critical items, we have been partnering with FEMA and called into action to fulfill contracts and provide support services during this deadly virus outbreak. Full Tilt’s partnership with FEMA goes back to Hurricane Harvey, and we have seen firsthand the devastation nature can bring. The current situation is much different.

Our drivers and carriers are critical in maintaining the lifeline supply chain. As sickness and death surround everyone, people realize that logistics and supply chain operations are needed for survival, with a sincere appreciation for the trucking industry. As part of the supply chain industry during these times, we are thankful to be able to do our part. Every day, we see or hear about an act of selflessness completed by someone making their contribution to the fight. We are so thankful to our drivers and carriers who continue to drive. Their commitment and willingness to stay on the road during this time keep supply chains open. It’s uplifting to know that people are communicating and collaborating as needed to service our frontline responders, our foodservice industry, and other vital needs. We are proud that Full Tilt Logistics is supporting the needs of FEMA and other industries responding to the war with the virus.

People often use logistics and distribution synonymously, but these two terms actually have considerable differences in the supply chain industry. While the two are both necessary for moving goods or products, they both provide different functions in the supply chain management process. For instance, logistics focuses on creating a strategic plan for moving goods, while distribution executes the transportation of such goods using thoughtful strategies. So, what is logistics and distribution? Take a look below to learn more!

What is Logistics?

Logistics refers to the planning, design, coordination, and management needed to begin the process of moving goods or products. A distinguishing characteristic of logistics is that it starts from the very beginning of the manufacturing stage of goods, and continues through the delivery of those goods and products to their intended retailers and consumers.

Also, a 3PL logistics company requires a significant amount of information to flow through all of its connected servers in order to successfully execute its goal. To illustrate, logistics requires the development of an automated inventory system that allows retailers to sync their 3PL logistics company’s computer systems with their distribution centers. Integrating these two systems will put more automated and expedited processes in place for handling ordering, fulfillment, and transportation of goods or products.

To simplify, logistics is a strategic plan that starts at the beginning and sees its way through to the end. Its end goal is to ensure that goods are stored and moved in the most efficient manner possible. Ideally, effective logistics techniques will move products safely and efficiently, in as little time as possible, at the lowest cost possible. This planning process will help improve warehousing and transportation functions so you can meet the needs of your retailer or consumer.

What is Distribution?

Distribution is one of the key elements used in the supply chain industry. It refers to the process in which a business makes products and plans how they’ll move the products so that they’re available to retailers or consumers. While the distribution process mostly consists of the physical transportation of goods through a specific distribution channel, it also includes the overall strategic plan for executing this action. For example, distribution considers:

Many people see distribution as the simple transportation of goods, but that’s not totally accurate. Distribution is able to provide transportation for goods by focusing on creating a strategic plan that finds the best methods for distributing products efficiently.

What’s the Difference between Logistics and Distribution?

While logistics and distribution require strategic planning in order to create effective solutions, there are some differences between these two concepts. For instance, logistics reviews the manufacturing process as a whole. It takes an overall view of the entire process to help improve distribution channels and warehouse management. This ensures the smooth flow of the supply chain and aims to focus primarily on creating effective solutions to accomplish this. On the other hand, distribution serves as a subcategory of logistics that focuses on getting goods delivered as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.

Although Full Tilt Logistics and Full Tilt Transportation are women-owned companies, there is no doubt that the big diesel engines are what power the organizations. Co-owners and brothers Nic and Cris Novich are the drivers of the bus. Everyone has their strengths and lanes of responsibility, but the Novich brothers are truly the leaders of the rapidly growing companies.

These two brothers have been closely connected their entire lives. Nic, the oldest, helped found Full Tilt Logistics in 2014 and convinced his younger brother Cris to join him in 2017 and create Full Tilt Transportation. The lifelong trust between the brothers cannot be emphasized enough; they have each other’s backs when things get hectic, as is usually the case in a freight brokerage, trucking, and transportation business. Although the brothers work closely together operating the two companies, they arrived at this business partnership in different ways.

Meet the Novich Brothers

Older brother Nic runs Full Tilt Logistics. He has worked with several large freight brokerage and transportation companies and was a key contributor in starting two brokerages before founding Full Tilt Logistics in 2014. He has experience and a thorough knowledge of the business. His sales ability and customer service skills are exceptional because he is honest and smart with a healthy dose of common sense. He is a high-energy, whatever-it-takes-to-get-the-job-done leader and is the true visionary of the company. He has always had and still does have a true vision of where Full Tilt will be in ten years, thinking several steps ahead of his business partners and employees. When we think things are going well and running Nic wonders “what if we did this” or “have you seen the latest technology” or “what if we bought a new building”. Without his knowledge of the industry and continuing to push the envelope, Full Tilt would not be where it is today.

Younger brother Cris runs Full Tilt Transportation. He joined the business in 2017 and was responsible for starting Full Tilt Transportation, the asset-based component of the organization. Cris is the numbers guy and was a successful Financial Advisor prior to joining the family business. With his leadership, the company has grown to eighteen power units and over forty 53’ dry van trailers. Although decisions must be made quickly, Cris’s planning and organizational skills ensure the company stays on track. Cris can often be found with a phone in each hand and five computer monitors in front of him. He is constantly focused on reducing operating expenses by finding fuel discounts and better insurance rates for the company. He recruits and hires drivers, develops business relationships with existing customers, and sells Full Tilt services to prospective customers.

Nic and Cris's passion and dedication to Full Tilt are always on display, and with their leadership, our employee base has grown, and we now boast some of the best, well-trained employees in the business. Leading by example, supporting employees, and providing them with opportunities to grow with the business have been key in recruiting and maintaining a competent workforce. Employees have the authority and are encouraged to take chances and make decisions to serve the customers' best interests. Nic and Cris are always available to support their employees when they need it. The brothers constantly check in with our customers to see how things are going from their side. In these conversations, we often hear how great it is to work with Full Tilt because customers can always reach an owner for a prompt response to a question or to get a problem solved quickly.

Although the success of Full Tilt is a major part of their lives, maintaining a solid family unit is most important to Nic and Cris. They are both wonderful fathers and husbands and are able to balance work and family effectively. Of course, both of their spouses are also part owners of the companies, so Full Tilt truly is a tight-knit family operation.

Our owners have deep roots in the local community, spanning four generations, and have watched the area grow from a dusty gambling town to a rapidly growing, energized city with high-tech companies such as Google, Switch, Tesla, Microsoft, and others locating in the area. Also, the revitalization of several areas of the city, unlimited outdoor recreation, and available job opportunities have driven the population growth and the desire to live in the area. With increased growth comes issues such as traffic, housing, and the need for additional community services.

How Full Tilt Gives Back

As business owners and stewards of our community, at Full Tilt, we understand that contributing and giving back to the community is as important as growing our business. This year, we were able to help many organizations through financial contributions, volunteer hours, and in-kind contributions. Some of them include:

What is the Young Professionals Network?

The Reno Tahoe Young Professionals Network (YPN) evolved out of a regional economic development planning process led by the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN). The Target 2010 project identified that retaining and attracting young talent is a critical need for the greater Reno-Tahoe region.

In January 2006, at the Directions Annual Conference, our community was challenged to empower young professionals to get involved in maintaining the region’s economic vitality and quality of life. In summer 2006, several focus groups were convened, asking young professionals what they were looking for in an organization geared towards them.

Out of those focus groups, the first meeting of the Reno Tahoe Young Professionals Network was held on November 9, 2006, with more than 40 people attending. In December of that year, the first board of directors was appointed. In February 2007, the group celebrated its official launch at Directions 2007 with more than 700 regional business leaders.

Reno Tahoe YPN has continued to evolve to meet the needs of a growing membership and changing economy. The focus has always been to cultivate an informed and active young professional community that collaborates with the community and a variety of established partner organizations throughout northern Nevada.
