reno rodeo

Whew! What a week…..Rodeo Week. It goes without saying that Full Tilt Logistics and Transportation work hard for our customers, with employees working as many hours as it takes to get it right every time. We take this business seriously and our trucks are always moving. The 3PL brokerage also believes that if you tell a customer you will do something – you do it….no excuses.

Life is not always about work and here at Full Tilt, we understand that. Full Tilt encourages employees to take time off, maintain a healthy lifestyle and cherish their family time. We all know how fast the years fly by and we understand how important it is to maintain a healthy balance between work and free time.

full tilt at the rodeo

We all had a chance to unwind this past week at the Reno Rodeo – “The Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West”. Full Tilt is good at what we do, trucking, freight brokerage, and solutions for warehouses in Reno NV, but we need to improve in our steer decorating technique. We had two teams in the steer decorating contest this year, one female and one male and neither team brought home the gold.

Full Tilt’s financial contribution to this year's Reno Rodeo allows the Rodeo Association to continue to be a major benefactor and contributor to our local community. The Rodeo Association helps our community in so many ways. They aid children with extraordinary needs, build community partnerships and fund grants and educational scholarships. Two of their programs are especially important to Full Tilt. The Denim Drive which has provided clothing to over 40,000 local abused, neglected and abandoned children and the Reading Room Books for Children which provides reading materials and volunteer readers which serves as a refuge for children who wind up in court situations, not by their own doing.

Full Tilt Logistics, trucking companies in reno nv, winter freight shipping

Full Tilt Transportation is a rapidly growing full-service trucking company headquartered in Reno, Nevada. Being in the Reno area, we are familiar with harsh weather conditions but it's nothing that we can't handle which is why we still offer winter freight shipping. The ability of trucking companies in Reno NV to reliably move goods around the nation is one of the cornerstones of the U.S. economy and truck drivers play a major role in that arena.

Not only is Reno a major distribution center and supplier of warehouses in Reno NV with a rapidly expanding economy, it is also strategically positioned for west coast distribution with service to the eleven western states with a one-day shipping time. We can reach the eight most western states overnight utilizing the cost savings of ground rates. Access to the I-5 corridor is roughly 90 minutes for service to the California market.

At Full Tilt, we only use expertly maintained, state-of-the-art equipment. Our drivers are friendly, clean, knowledgeable, experienced, and safety conscious. We present cost-effective and creative solutions and strive to maintain strong, long lasting relationships with our customers. Our on-time and on-budget deliveries are what other companies strive for. With Full Tilt, you can properly manage trucking costs and adapt to the ever-evolving market. Work with people you trust at all levels with transactional, contractual, route planning and all outsource solutions.

Passion For the Trucking Business

Full Tilt owners have a passion for the business and are fully engaged in the operation and actively seek to improve the company on an ongoing basis. The trucking component of the business is headed up by Cris Novich – Managing Director of Transportation. He is personally engaged with the company’s top clients.
Cris gets out from behind his desk to meet Full Tilt trucking clients face-to-face to form strong bonds with them. He takes a keen interest in his clients’ businesses. He also seeks to establish a personal rapport with all Full Tilt clients that extends beyond the office.

Good leaders understand the trucking business, but no one is an expert in all facets of the trucking business. Over time, they learn those aspects of the business that are not their core competence. Cris has immersed himself in all facets of the trucking business so he can operate the company from a position of strength.

Know the Numbers

Good trucking companies in Reno NV know all elements of financial statements and challenge every number that is not consistent with normal readings or last year’s numbers. At Full Tilt, we know what to look for and where to get it to set in motion action plans to keep our business on track. We know when it is time to say, “this is not good enough”, “it is not acceptable, and we need to do better”. We don’t tolerate customer complaints or sub-standard service and encourage all employees to find solutions that significantly enhance the value of our customers’ experiences.

Keep Cool and Project a Mature Image to Employees

The trucking business is competitive and challenging. Dealing with driver turnover, rate cuts and equipment shortages takes its toll. It is easy to “lose your cool” and throw a temper tantrum or use inappropriate language. These acts can undermine the confidence of employees and customers and hurt the credibility of Full Tilt leaders. We are constantly aware of maintaining a calm composure which we believe inspires confidence and stability with our employees. At Full Tilt, we emphasize listening to what employees and customers say without interruption. We try to respond in a thoughtful and respectful manner. We believe this will instill openness and trust. This allows problems to surface rather than festering and being hidden from view.

Hire Good People and Follow Through

It’s a priority at Full Tilt to hire and train quality people. We are not afraid to hire great people with ideas that are different from ours. We encourage employee input and are always seeking ways to do things better. There is no such thing as a dumb question. We support our employee team so they can help the company on new and productive paths. We always follow through on a commitment and if we say we’ll do something we will do it. This consistency and transparency a cornerstone of our company culture. We evaluate the information and make timely decisions. At Full Tilt, things happen quickly and we must make decisions without procrastination.

Full Tilt is Proud to Employ Women Truck Drivers

Full Tilt Transportation and Full Tilt Logistics are rapidly growing Women-Owned companies located in the beautiful Reno – Tahoe area. Owners Tiffany Novich, Jessica Novich, and Cindy Novich have broken barriers in male-dominated industries by surrounding themselves with the best people, providing excellent customer service and following through on their commitments. They continue to support qualified women truck drivers striving to better themselves and prove they are up to the challenge of transporting products in 80 feet of muscle, carrying up to 80,000 pounds of freight.

One example is Tamlynn Hegdahl, one of Full Tilt’s most reliable drivers. She has been with Full Tilt for almost three years. When we spoke with Tamlynn about being a female truck driver, she was waiting in a warehouse watching a gang of men load her truck for a cross country trip back east. Tamlynn is earning her stripes as a cross-country big-rig driver, hoping to attract more women to cope with an industry-wide driver shortage.

Being a Woman Truck Driver

The trucker lifestyle can be hard on men and even harder for women. Far from family and friends, women can face harassment, sexism, personal hygiene challenges, safety concerns and living in a rolling home on wheels, sometimes for extended periods of time. “There was one time I didn’t have a shower for five days and that was hard.” Tamlynn has learned to take precautions when it comes to safety. “I avoid parking in rest stops because of the poor lighting and higher crime areas than truck stops.” She also likes to park in the fuel line at the truck stops to run inside for food or to use the restroom. “Confidence is the key…. walk briskly and don’t make eye contact.” Men can park anywhere, but Tamlynn parks in lighted areas and avoids walking between parked trucks and never lets anyone know she is alone. “I’m always on guard. I draw the curtains in my cab as soon as I stop and keep them drawn so no one knows I’m alone.”

Downtime is valuable to a long-haul driver. “I’m not home often so relationships can be hard, but you adjust and make it work.” Tamlynn sees favoritism on a regular basis, as many women truck drivers do. “Shippers and receivers can be condescending and some still don’t think I’m the driver. On the other hand, they may load me first because I’m a woman. It’s all part of the job.”

Increasing Number of Women in the Industry

Tamlynn says she sees more and more women truck drivers. “The other day I was fueling up and there were women drivers on both sides of me, so it’d definitely changing.” It’s a lot of responsibility when you get behind the wheel and she says she is probably more cautious than many of her men counterparts.

Bottom line…. Tamlynn loves the job and the money is great. “I have a degree in psychology and sold insurance for many years and last year I made more money than I ever had.” She loves the long hauls and seeing new places. “My office has the best view in the world and I feel like I’m my own boss. I would never have the chance to see so many places if I wasn’t behind the wheel. I have a great life.”

Looking for a Career in this Industry?

Full Tilt is always looking for qualified drivers. At our rapidly growing Logistics and Transportation company, we employ personable and dedicated team members and like to provide an engaging and constructive environment for all employees. Winter Freight Shipping

Trucking and Logistics is a tough business because there are so many moving parts (pun intended). There is never a dull moment in this industry with all of the deadlines, issues, broken commitments, delays, fuel prices, driver shortages, and so much more. The business becomes even more challenging during the winter months. Winter freight shipping can be a challenge with weather delays, road closures, accidents, and installing and removing chains all become a part of the drivers’ days. With all of these unpredictable circumstances, winter freight shipping requires good equipment, great drivers, and detailed planning.

How Full Tilt Handles Winter Freight Shipping

At Full Tilt, we thrive on the challenges winter weather presents. As the premier Reno-based transportation and trucking company, we face these challenges head-on especially when it comes to winter freight shipping. From years of experience, we know that the best way to handle these challenges is to begin with thorough planning. For this reason, our dispatchers and brokers are constantly monitoring weather maps across the country to stay up-to-date on all major weather events. When the weather presents a threat, delays are factored into the commitments we make to our customers. We never over-promise when it comes to scheduled deliveries. Full Tilt works with our customers to make sure deadlines are always achievable, no matter what Mother Nature may throw our way. As a matter of fact, we tend to under-promise and over-deliver to ensure satisfaction. This helps lead to happy customers, repeat business, and an ever-increasing customer base.

Winter Freight Shipping
Experts in Winter Freight Shipping

Being headquartered in the Reno-Tahoe area, at the foot of the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range, gives Full Tilt plenty of opportunity to develop the skills needed for reliable winter freight shipping. Our “hill hopping” drivers love the challenge of exceeding customer expectations when the weather is challenging. “Hill hopping” is moving product from Reno to the San Francisco Bay Area by crossing the Sierras and scaling the notorious Donner Pass Summit. With our experience in the Sierras, we can effectively navigate weather systems across the US and Canada.

The Full Tilt Advantage

Again, it begins with thorough planning, scheduling, driver training and utilizing the best equipment on the road. Even in this tight driver market, due to serious driver shortages and high driver demand, we select only the best drivers for Full Tilt. We thoroughly vet drivers based on several factors, pay them well, provide excellent benefits, and put them in the best equipment available.

Reno Logistics Company

We Moved!

Finally, after months of construction Full Tilt Logistics and Full Tilt Transportation have relocated! Our new company-owned headquarters is located at 470 East Plumb Lane in Reno. This 11,116 square foot three-story office building located in the heart of Reno will provide Full Tilt, your Reno logistics company, the ability to strategically grow the business to serve an ever-increasing customer base.

The building interior was demolished and redesigned to meet the fast pace environment in today’s freight brokerage services and trucking business. Space planning and design were done by prominent local architects Collaborative Design Studio of Reno. The redesign incorporated an industrial open office concept, utilizing the latest lighting and space conditioning technology to increase energy efficiency and lower our carbon footprint. Interior décor was provided by Reno Business Interiors and building construction was done by longtime local contractor C3 Construction. New exterior signage and paint were used to professionally brand the building consistent with Full Tilt’s company image. The latest in building security and video surveillance make the company headquarters one of the most secure facilities in the area. New fencing and parking lot resurfacing will be completed soon.

Efficiency Is Important to Full Tilt

Full Tilt worked closely with a local energy supplier, NV Energy, to maximize lighting load reduction by entirely retrofitting the building and replacing incandescent and fluorescent lighting with high efficiency LED technology. Building interior and exterior lighting now utilizes motion sensors, timers, and photocells that automatically adjust the lighting based on ambient light levels. This technology minimizes lighting load while providing employees with optimal light levels to operate in the most effective manner.

In addition, Full Tilt partnered with NV Energy in their “power shift” energy management system. Program equipment was installed to enable communication between NV Energy demand response management system and Full Tilt equipment. This equipment provides energy efficiency and demand savings in addition to gaining operation and maintenance efficiencies.

Part of the Full Tilt culture is focused on efficiency and being good stewards of our environment. Our growing trucking fleet is the most fuel efficient on the road and our new building and related energy efficiency are consistent with our approach to utilizing resources in the best way possible.

Shipping to Burning Mam

“A unique and distinctive culture emerges from the Burning Man experience. Rooted in the values expressed by the Ten Principles, this culture is manifested around the globe through art, communal effort, and innumerable individual acts of self-expression. To many, it is a way of life.”

Burning Man 2018

Every year, thousands gather in the temporary city of Black Rock City, Nevada to celebrate Burning Man. This annual week-long event is known around the world and is famous for its unique culture. Participants from all over come to the Black Rock Desert to experience the culture, performances, and art. A few of the activities available to the "Burners" include spa treatments, temporary tattoo tents, yoga and meditation classes, and silent discos. Burning Man 2018 attracted over 70,000 people and exhibited over 70 art pieces.

Have you ever wondered how those gigantic art pieces get to the Playa? Shipping to Burning Man is an aspect of the event that often goes unnoticed but plays a significant part in the week. The art pieces vary in size and can weigh up to several tons, making them a challenge to transport. The best solution is to leave the transportation of Burning Man art up to the local professionals.

Full Tilt’s Role in Shipping to Burning Man

Operating a trucking and transportation company is always an adventure. Over the years, Full Tilt has provided Burning Man with freight brokerage services and has moved many types of freight to many different locations. This year we again were the major trucking company of burning man art, survival necessities, musical equipment, and camp supplies for several well-known celebrities.

Trucking freight to Burning Man may sound easy with delivery to the middle of the Nevada desert, however, nothing could be further from the truth. The regulations in place from the BLM, crossing reservation land, Burning Man security and required clearances make the job extremely challenging. Permits and passes are rigorously checked and enforced. Also, the inevitable delays associated with long lines, restricted access, and dust storms.

Deliveries occur at all hours and our drivers often dropped loads in the wee hours to accommodate the building of the various art projects. Bottom line…. Full Tilt gets the job done. We are flexible, dedicated, easy to work with the highest level of problem-solving skills. For on-time delivery of anything, anywhere Full Tilt Logistics and Transportation are the best in the business. Connect with Full Tilt today!

For Full Tilt, competing with other Nevada trucking companies means staying savvy.

At Full Tilt Logistics, we've grown rapidly and worked diligently to position ourselves alongside other Nevada trucking companies since our creation in 2014. Full Tilt Transportation has exploded too, with rapid growth since its founding in 2017. With such expansion in both the logistics and transportation branches, there also come many challenges. Trucking companies in Reno NV are growing quickly so anticipating and preparing for every issue associated with growth is never easy.

The business plan is essential.

For Full Tilt, completing a business plan was step one. Of course, nothing ever goes according to plan; however, the business plan forced us to put in writing an actionable plan with realistic goals, estimated costs, and a concrete timeline. Our business plan is a living breathing document that requires frequent performance measurement and evaluation. This then translates into an operating plan.

Good Nevada trucking companies adapt continually to environmental factors.

A good operating plan must be adaptable to changing market conditions. Many of these conditions, like fuel costs, are out of our control, but they still require us to respond. Other costs such as insurance, driver pay, benefits, and overhead are easier to estimate and plan for the long term. Regulations, safety, training, and other topics are also factored in to estimate the average price per mile. That helps determine if we break even, lose money or make a profit. We regularly review the plan to identify areas where costs can be trimmed, or revenue can be increased. Our staff is aware of general market conditions, making them quick to react to change.

Well maintained trucking equipment means increased on-time delivery performance.

Trucking companies in Reno NV need to understand that maintenance requirements are critical. For this reason, we operate within our fleet a combination of leased and purchased equipment. Leased equipment can lower costs in the short-term, while purchased equipment and a solid preventative maintenance program can lower long-term costs. Working and well maintained leased and purchased equipment ultimately increases on-time delivery performance for our customers.

Shipping lanes and timing are critical to finding the most profitable options.

All of the aforementioned costs are overlaid with various trucking lanes to determine the best, most profitable options for our customers and ourselves. Identifying niche markets helps provide the highest return for the company. Understanding cash flow requirements, payment terms and aggressively manage and mitigate our receivables. We aggressively focus on a market segment, become proficient in that segment and then attack another market opportunity.

Freight doesn't move on trucks, it moves on relationships.

Picking the right business partners is vital to our success. As a small local family-owned business, our philosophy is to support similarly situated businesses in our area. Whether it be banks, equipment and service providers, technical support or anything else we look to local providers first. This has allowed us to develop strong business relationships within the local community. We contribute financially and with in-kind service hours with several local non-profit organizations.

Good employees define an organization's culture.

Even with proper planning and foresight, rapid growth of trucking companies in Reno NV would not be sustainable without the most proficient employees in the industry. Our employees are the lifeblood of the company and we treat them with great respect. We place high expectations on our employees, but giving them respect means that they deliver. Attracting the best people to any company is challenging, especially in such a tight labor market; however, retaining exemplary employees is a high priority for us at Full Tilt.

We focus our company's culture on family and we encourage our employees to realize family comes first and working at Full Tilt is just a job. Our employee turnover is low, and we realize a happy employee makes for a happy customer. We thoroughly train employees, pay well, provide an attractive benefits package and a safe, positive, workplace environment.

For Full Tilt, the bottom line is clear:

  1. Be disciplined, create a winning strategy, and stick to it.
  2. Communicate with employees, customers and service providers.
  3. Pay attention to the details and have fun.

Nevada Trucking Companies, trucking companies in reno nv

Trucking companies in Reno NV experience shipper and receiver delays.

We generally associate logistics companies with words like "efficient" and "fast" - its something trucking companies in Reno NV strive for. However; these terms can be misleading as shippers and receivers can negatively impact efficiency. There are numerous circumstances beyond the control of the trucking company. Overall, the industry needs to become more aware of the impact shippers and receivers have on the logistics industry and a trucking company’s operations.

Connect With Full Tilt Today

Shippers and Receivers can delay and detain drivers at the docks while loading or unloading their truck.

Shipper and receiver delays and detentions cause problems, especially at the docks. These hold-ups also affect operations and other loads. When a logistics company waits for loading and unloading at a receiver it may affect the timing of the next load pick up. If a receiver takes an excessive amount of time loading or unloading, the trucking company could potentially be late and miss their next load. This often results in unhappy and frustrated customers. Delays also affect driver morale, especially when drivers spend too much time waiting for loading or unloading. Delays and detentions also affect a Driver's work time and pay. If a customer denies detention, the logistics company may have to go out of pocket to make it right with the carrier.

Every hour a truck is parked at a dock is an hour it’s not on the road driving.

Most truckers are paid by the mile. This means that every hour a truck is parked at the dock and not on the road driving means the driver isn't getting paid. Shipments that aren't ready often contribute to delays at the dock. Similarly, warehouses have union workers who take breaks and sometimes don’t care about a carrier's or a driver's time. Order placement mix-ups can also delay drivers. These are all factors beyond the driver's control, but they're significant. In many cases, the shipper or receiver pays the trucking company for the load and then the trucking company pays the driver. Bottom line: if a driver isn't driving, everyone starts losing money.

How shipper and receiver appointment time policies affect trucking companies in Reno NV:

Some shippers and receivers have appointment time policies. If a driver doesn't show up by their appointment time, then the shipper or receiver will "work them in" and load or unload the truck at their own leisure. This happens most often when drivers arrive at the shipper before their set appointment time. Instead of setting fixed appointment times, some shippers and receivers set "open window" appointment times, such as between 08:00 – 15:00 - a 7-hour time frame. This affords the driver greater flexibility in planning their trip.

At Full Tilt, when a driver is on time for his or her appointment, the first two hours of waiting time are "on the driver." This means that they don’t get paid for up to a two-hour wait. We make sure that the shippers and receivers who do business with us are aware of this policy. Our policy is for drivers is to always arrive at the destination before the agreed upon appointment time. If traffic, weather, accidents or any other problem delays a driver, they proactively contact dispatch. Dispatch then immediately communicates the situation to the shipper.

Some trucking companies in Reno NV realize that traffic accidents, extremely bad weather or truck mechanical difficulties can delay a driver. These are reasons beyond their control; however, appointment policies are (in general) a good idea.

Full Tilt Logistic's shipper and receiver best practices and policies:

Full Tilt communicates whenever there's a delay. It is important to be aware of how one particular delay might affect the delivery or pick up of a subsequent load. This helps trucking companies in Reno NV, like Full Tilt, avoid a “service failure” downstream. In this industry service is all we have to sell, so communicating expectations and realities is important.

Whenever a Full Tilt driver arrives at a shipper or receiver who is doing a live load or unload, they will inquire as to how long the process will take. If the company states that it will take "a while," our driver informs them that the first two hours of waiting are on him, but that he will get paid the company's rate per hour for every hour thereafter. At Full Tilt we have had drivers stuck at a shipper's location for up to six hours - this is a worst-case scenario.

For each shipment, our drivers document the following:

Keeping driver times documented they are able to easily put the times on the bills of lading. This ensures that the driver receives any and all due waiting time pay. If bills of lading delay or detain the driver and cause them to wait, their time is also eligible for wait time pay.

How communication is critical to a trucking company's success:

Due to federal hours of service regulations and the long time it may take the shipper to load his trailer, we may not able to commit to delivering the load by the original delivery time in the load assignment. Constant driver communication with our office allows our dispatcher to amend the delivery time as necessary. Our customers are always in the loop and we communicate frequently on the status of every load to avoid surprises.

Full Tilt drivers never dawdle once a shipper or receiver completes their tasks associated with a load. Once a shipper or receiver calls, our goal is to respond within two minutes. At Full Tilt, we constantly review wait time pay records to determine how long a driver's equipment is held "hostage." This also includes the amount of money spent on diesel while the truck idles.

We avoid customers who habitually break time commitments with us. Shipper delays are often costly. Full Tilt professional drivers who are delayed and detained at the shippers are paid for wait time and we try and recover these costs beyond our control.

Fast and efficient trucking companies in Reno NV commit to the following:

Northern Nevada Trucking Company

Full Tilt Logistics is the only trucking company named as an EDAWN Corporate Citizen Award winner.

The EDAWN Existing Industry Awards recognize Primary Companies in the Northern Nevada region for their outstanding contribution to our community in a variety of ways. The Existing Industry Awards are a great opportunity to recognize existing Primary Companies for their contributions and Full Tilt was recently named as a recipient of the Corporate Citizen Award.

Northern Nevada Trucking Company

What's EDAWN and why does this matter for trucking companies in Reno, like Full Tilt?

Northern Nevada Trucking Company

The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada or EDAWN offers assistance to prospective, new and existing companies in Northern Nevada. Over the last three years, they've helped over 300 companies to relocate or expand in the Greater Reno-Sparks region. Specifically, they assist in: site selection, in-depth research, statistics, and regional business data, industrial and office real estate searches, specialized reports, connectivity, and representation.

Full Tilt Logistics is a family owned and certified Women-Owned Business. Although small, we are unlike other trucking companies in Reno. Since 2014 our logistics company has had a significant impact, not only on redefining the freight and dedicated transportation business in the Reno area but in the contributions in money and employee volunteer hours to the local community. Recognition for these efforts by a large entity like EDAWN confirms that we are on the right path not only as a business but as a community partner.

Full Tilt's local community partnerships are numerous.

Northern Nevada Trucking Company

Full Tilt's culture encourages team members to focus on family and giving back to the community. This is something other trucking companies don't always focus on, but we believe that it is the secret to our success. Of our various community partnerships, Urban Roots is one of our most active. Urban Roots is a local non-profit that dedicates itself to growing healthy minds, bodies, and communities through education and service.

We sponsor an Urban Roots school garden and buy tee shirts for their summer camp. From planting and harvesting to preparing what we grow, Urban Roots follows food from seed-to-table, empowering students of all ages to answer the question, “Where does our food come from?” We also have team members heavily involved in the Truckee Meadows Boys and Girls Club by being on the Young Leaders Committee, serving as mentors for at-risk youth and donating money to the organization monthly.

In addition, a Full Tilt team member is a founding member of the Mater Academy of Northern Nevada, a Charter School for at-risk youth.  We contribute to the MS Society, American Heart Association and Moms on the Run.  We volunteer at Thanksgiving to feed families at the Boys and Girls Club and provided a significant donation to the Jammies Drive which provides pajamas for babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  We have also donated thousands of dollars of office equipment to a local church.  This past year we organized a “diaper drive” for the Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston. We have already seen how hurricanes and other factors are affecting dedicated transportation, so it's significant that we were able to fill a 53-foot trailer and provide the transportation free of charge to those Texas children in need.
