As of early 2021, the logistics and supply chain industry is 22 percent women. There are slightly less women in warehouse and distribution roles, at 19 percent. We’re proud to be a women owned business and have women working at every level of our company, from our CEO to our drivers.

Jessica N. “I enjoy spending time with my husband who is also my best friend and coworker. My three children are the center of my world: Porter, Paige and Penny. In my down time you can find me doing physical activity or curled up on the couch with my family watching a Marvel or Harry Potter movie.”
Tiffany N. “I love spending time with my husband, Nic and my two children Avrie and Luke. We spend our time skiing, participating in archery, wrestling and hiking. I enjoy a decent spa day once in a while, and I love a good nap. “
Our Chief Financial Officer, Cindy, enjoys being able to travel with her husband, spend time at their home in Graeagle with family and working with her children and in-laws!
Taylor: “I love spending time with my loved ones, whether that’s friends or family. After years of development, I find that being with those who are most supportive in your life can be incredibly grounding. We spend a lot of time eating together, fighting like a family, and lifting each other up. I spent most of my teenage years in and out of doctors appointments which has made me appreciate the little things a lot more. I like to spend as much time as I can with my loved ones. Cris Novich, Managing Director of Full Tilt Transportation, recently participated in a three-person expert panel discussing supply chain issues effecting the global, national, and local economies. The event was sponsored by the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) organization and brought together experts to discuss supply chain issues.
The worldwide supply chain has been severely disrupted due to several factors including supply chain shortcomings, increased fuel costs, winter weather and COVID. The phenomena has been called The Everything Shortage and has resulted in product scarcity and increased prices. It’s also spurned innovation in utilizing alternate sources and a movement from offshoring to onshoring.
The panelists discussed the current state of the supply chain and what they predict for the immediate and long-term future of the shipping and delivery market. Audience participation included many questions and comments. The peak season for logistics companies is near and this year we’re noticing new logistics insights and supply chain trends. While consumption of products continues to increase, the need for reliable logistics and transportation is more present than ever within the supply chain. However, there are several obstacles that present themselves this season that are hindering many logistics companies’ ability to deliver.
Full Tilt Logistics has been closely following these supply chain trends and logistics insights to fully prepare for the work ahead. Take a look below to learn more about our findings.
The supply chain trends of the 2021 peak season are somewhat different than what was expected originally. While it is true that eCommerce and in-store shopping are projected to continue increasing throughout the holiday shopping season as is true of previous trends, the peak season itself is likely going to shift. In past years, the peak season typically sees its height around Black Friday. However, in 2021, roughly 25% of consumers claim that they plan to have their holiday shopping done before Black Friday, shifting the peak of the season to be earlier than anticipated.
Another supply chain trend we’re noticing is the growing backlog of container ships being held offshore. In 2020, the U.S. ports held their worst historical numbers of backlogged ships and though many people believed this would improve, the backlog has only continued to accrue more vessels. More than 100 ships were backlogged in October off the ports of Southern California, waiting to be unloaded. To fully clear this up, there would need to be a hold on all incoming vessels for about 2 weeks — a feat likely to never occur.
Challenges in logistics faced during peak season vary, but the most prominent we’ve seen thus far include the strict California regulations and taxes on logistics distributions, historically high fuel and insurance costs, inclement weather impeding the ability to safely travel, and finally, the nationwide labor shortage.
Doing business in California as part of the supply chain is not an easy task. California taxes and regulations significantly limit transportation opportunities in and out of the state. Take, for example, California’s state fuel tax rate which sits at 62.5 cents per gallon while the national average is at just 24.4 cents per gallon.
Fuel costs have risen significantly in the past year for both gas and diesel. Diesel fuel itself is up 57% from 2020. With the ever-changing fuel efficiency standards occurring in the nation, we’re bound to see costs continue to rise. Similarly, insurance costs are getting out of hand as well. With the cost of insurance going up, trucking companies are held responsible for more liability than ever before which drives up costs.
During the second quarter of 2021, more than 25% of open job positions were in the logistics industry. The biggest issue with this is that logistics require nearly 3x the labor force than traditional warehouses. With the demand for transportation being higher than the labor capacity allows, it’s evident that a large number of drivers are still needed and this number is likely to continue growing with the supply chain trends.
As it stands right now, roughly 110,000 drivers will need to be hired each year to keep up with the demand. Unfortunately, driver retention and recruitment continue to pose a constant threat to logistics businesses.

The last twelve months have been game-changing in many ways with most industries and businesses either adapting to the new normal or going out of business. Good, hard-working people have lost jobs or had to live with reductions in income because of Covid-19. Many have become ill or died because of the pandemic. As companies try and adjust to increased regulations and risks, tough decisions must be made quickly.

This pandemic put our companies in survival mode, and it is telling how you react when it is sink or swim. We are so proud and thankful for the strong family unit and wonderful employees working at Full Tilt. Our drivers, dispatchers, schedulers, account managers, brokers, and support staff have gone above and beyond, and we wouldn’t be here today without all of them.
As many of our long-term customers faltered, scaled back operations, or went out of business we developed stronger partnerships with the survivors to get through this together. We are seeing an uptick and a rising from the ashes for many customers. They all know they can count on Full Tilt and we have been a true partner and resource for many. During the past twelve months, we have redoubled our efforts to improve our effectiveness and efficiency as they relate to solving unique customer problems. We have invested significant dollars on new software and technology and the associated training for our employees. All done to improve service to our customers and encourage our employees to make the extra effort and go the extra mile to solve customer problems.
The pandemic has hit truck drivers especially hard. If truck stops are full and rest areas aren’t open, long-haulers may be forced to stop and sleep in unsafe spaces. Truck drivers are working hard but they need to park, rest, and take advantage of the facilities at rest stops. There is no doubt the US would not get through this pandemic without truck drivers. They are the unsung heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic that are holding the supply chain together. Without their willingness to work around the clock to deliver the supplies needed to restock America’s shelves, the country would grind to a halt.
As they are working, truckers are also doing their best to keep themselves healthy. While many people can stay home and protect themselves from COVID-19 exposure, truckers are not so lucky. People often use the terms 3PL and freight broker interchangeably, however, this creates confusion regarding the nuances of either service. 3PLs and Freight Brokers are both intermediaries between the shipper and the carrier, yet their roles differ. A broker focuses primarily on executing a singular shipment and works to meet specific cost and service goals. The 3PL provider thinks about the bigger picture and more strategically. They plan earlier in the supply chain and anticipate the needs of a client through every step of the supply chain, transport, and delivery process.
A freight broker will often focus on one single shipment and act as a non-asset bearing intermediary between a shipper with goods to transport and a carrier who actually moves the freight. Essentially, a Freight broker works directly with owner-operators nationwide to coordinate individual shipments. Freight brokers currently handle significant amounts of truck transport in North America.
In the grand scheme of things, freight brokers often connect with hundreds or even thousands of small to medium-sized freight carriers to provide a large network of shipment options. This then affords shippers alternatives to larger freight carrier providers. Smaller carrier operations often rely more on brokers for business than larger carrier providers, because these larger carriers often have long standing relationships with 3PL companies.
In another post, we detail what a third party logistics company is, but in its broadest form, 3PL applies to any service contract that involves the storing or shipping of a commodity. A 3rd party logistics company may only offer a single service, like transportation, warehouses in Reno NV, or inventory management. However, it may also offer a system-wide bundling of services and management of a client's entire supply chain. Many 3rd party logistics companies integrate operations. Warehousing and transportation services are all tailored to a client's needs.
A third-party logistics company is typically an asset-bearing firm that establishes relationships with shippers on a broader scale. Third-party logistics companies typically make an investment in physical and human capital including brick-and-mortar locations and wheels on the ground.
Shippers looking for involvement with a collaborative transportation network will find that a 3PL fits their needs. However, there is a role for freight brokers in relation to shippers with already established 3PL relationships. If a shipper requires greater flexibility in their shipping needs, they may add a brokerage firm to supplement their shipping needs. Long-standing relationships developed by 3PL’s can pose an advantage when shipping capacity is tight. When it comes to your own company, it’s not about choosing between a 3PL or a freight broker. Shippers establish relationships with 3PL companies and freight brokerages in the interest of reducing shipping costs.
Many businesses deal in some way with finding suppliers. As a small business owner, there is no doubt that you engage in distribution logistics, inventory management, and warehousing at some level. Although Full Tilt Logistics and Full Tilt Transportation are women-owned companies, there is no doubt who the big diesel engines are that power the organizations. Co-owners and brothers Nic and Cris Novich are the drivers of the bus. Everyone has their strengths and lanes of responsibility, but the Novich brothers are truly the leaders of the rapidly growing companies.
These two brothers have been closely connected their entire lives. Nic, the oldest helped found Full Tilt Logistics in 2014 and convinced younger brother Cris to join him in 2017 and create Full Tilt Transportation. The lifelong trust between the brothers cannot be emphasized enough, they have each other’s backs when things get hectic as is usually the case in a freight brokerage, trucking, and transportation business. Although the brothers work closely together operating the two companies, they arrived at this business partnership in different ways.
Older brother Nic runs Full Tilt Logistics. He has worked with several large freight brokerage and transportation companies and was a key contributor in starting two brokerages before founding Full Tilt Logistics in 2014. He has experience and a thorough knowledge of the business. His sales ability and customer service skills are exceptional because he is honest and smart with a healthy dose of common sense. He is a high-energy, whatever it takes to get the job done leader and is the true visionary of the companies. He has always had and still does have a true vision of where Full Tilt will be in ten years, thinking several steps ahead of his business partners and employees. When we think things are going well and running smoothly Nic wonders “what if we did this” or “have you seen the latest technology” or “what if we bought a new building”. Without his knowledge of the industry and continuing to push the envelope, Full Tilt would not be where it is today.
Younger brother Cris runs Full Tilt Transportation. He joined the business in 2017 and was responsible for starting Full Tilt Transportation, the asset-based component of the organizations. Cris is the numbers guy and was a successful Financial Advisor prior to joining the family business. With his leadership, the company has grown to eighteen power units and over forty 53’ dry van trailers. Although decisions must be made quickly, Cris’s planning and organizational skills ensure the company stays on track. Cris can often be found with a phone in each hand and five computer monitors in front of him. He is constantly focused on reducing operating expenses by finding fuel discounts and better insurance rates for the company. He recruits and hires drivers, develops business relationships with existing customers, and sells Full Tilt services to prospective customers.
Nic and Cris's passion and dedication to Full Tilt is always on display and with their leadership, our employee base has grown and we now boast some of the best, well-trained employees in the business. Leading by example, supporting employees and providing them with opportunities to grow with the business have been key in recruiting and maintaining a competent workforce. Employees have the authority and are encouraged to take chances and make decisions to serve the customers' best interests. Nic and Cris are always available to support their employees when they need it. The brothers constantly check in with our customers to see how things are going from their side.
