Reno NV Trucking Companies

What's an ELD (Electronic Logging Device)?

Reno NV trucking companies are witnessing the biggest change in the trucking industry in over 50 years. Back in December, 2015 the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published the final electronic logging device rule — or ELD mandate. What this mandate means is that every commercial vehicle - especially those related to long haul trucking - require an electronic logging device. This device is more commonly referred to as an ELD. ELD's are essentially part of a government mandated program that replace paper logbooks in all commercial vehicles. This regulation takes effect in December 2018.

This is a massive change for Reno NV trucking companies who still use paper logs.

This device is a piece of hardware that records commercial vehicle driving hours. It also enables our own shippers and Full Tilt drivers to monitor shipment status. This government mandate aims to “improve roadway safety by using technology to strengthen commercial driver’s compliance with hours-of-service regulations that prevent fatigue.” Drivers may then print their logs and provide them to DOT Enforcement Inspectors as part of their already required documentation.

Think of ELDs as automatic on-board recorders that electronically record a driver’s activity and log their Hours of Service. Back-office fleet management software often connects with ELD’s to submit real-time driving logs back to base. One of the overarching goals may be to increase driver safety on the road, but ELDs also allow for greater transparency throughout the shipping and trucking process - a valuable asset for shippers and truckers alike.

How will the ELD mandate impact the larger trucking industry and local Reno NV trucking companies?

Reno NV Trucking Companies
Typical ELD System

The ELD mandate is perhaps the biggest change within the trucking industry in over 50 years. It isn't surprising then that many industry insiders are less than thrilled by these advances. In this particular trucking debate, as in others, there are two sides to the story. As a personal time management tool, ELDs have the potential to eliminate time consuming manual paperwork and undoubtedly save drivers time; however, there are skeptics.

These skeptics suggest an overall loss in trucking industry productivity due to new hours-of-service rules - a legitimate and potentially significant concern. Shipping rates add concern as well. Combining these issues potentially drives up freight spend in the spot market.

At this time, there is no way to accurately gauge how many fleets or local Reno NV trucking companies are running with paper logs and knowingly violating hours-of-service regulations. It is also unclear how many of these potential violators will be unable to continue operating in a post-ELD environment - without a doubt, there are many.

Regardless, more drivers will be needed to make up driver hours if hours are reduced. We know now that driver shortages are due to outside factors like natural disaster and seasonal rises in shipping traffic. There is also potential for this new ELD regulation to add to driver shortages.

We cannot know for certain; however, by many estimates ELD will reduce driver and fleet hours, creating additional demand nationally and locally amongst other Reno trucking companies. This all translates to higher pricing. In the end, we foresee an added pressure on trucking companies to make up their losses in productivity and hours with additional drivers. This ultimately creates more competition for drivers and potentially leads to higher driver wages.

How Full Tilt is ahead of other Reno NV trucking companies.

Assuming “reasonable enforcement” of the law, we won't see the true impact of the regulation until late in 2018. Regardless, at Full Tilt we are already ahead of the curve and compliant with all ELD standards. The result: little to no impact on our customers. Approximately 40% of U.S. trucking fleets already use ELD’s and Full Tilt is no different.

At Full Tilt our operators and drivers use ELD’s and are fully compliant with the upcoming deadline.

Northern Nevada Trucking Company

Full Tilt Logistics is the only trucking company named as an EDAWN Corporate Citizen Award winner.

The EDAWN Existing Industry Awards recognize Primary Companies in the Northern Nevada region for their outstanding contribution to our community in a variety of ways. The Existing Industry Awards are a great opportunity to recognize existing Primary Companies for their contributions and Full Tilt was recently named as a recipient of the Corporate Citizen Award.

Northern Nevada Trucking Company

What's EDAWN and why does this matter for trucking companies in Reno, like Full Tilt?

Northern Nevada Trucking Company

The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada or EDAWN offers assistance to prospective, new and existing companies in Northern Nevada. Over the last three years, they've helped over 300 companies to relocate or expand in the Greater Reno-Sparks region. Specifically, they assist in: site selection, in-depth research, statistics, and regional business data, industrial and office real estate searches, specialized reports, connectivity, and representation.

Full Tilt Logistics is a family owned and certified Women-Owned Business. Although small, we are unlike other trucking companies in Reno. Since 2014 our logistics company has had a significant impact, not only on redefining the freight and dedicated transportation business in the Reno area but in the contributions in money and employee volunteer hours to the local community. Recognition for these efforts by a large entity like EDAWN confirms that we are on the right path not only as a business but as a community partner.

Full Tilt's local community partnerships are numerous.

Northern Nevada Trucking Company

Full Tilt's culture encourages team members to focus on family and giving back to the community. This is something other trucking companies don't always focus on, but we believe that it is the secret to our success. Of our various community partnerships, Urban Roots is one of our most active. Urban Roots is a local non-profit that dedicates itself to growing healthy minds, bodies, and communities through education and service.

We sponsor an Urban Roots school garden and buy tee shirts for their summer camp. From planting and harvesting to preparing what we grow, Urban Roots follows food from seed-to-table, empowering students of all ages to answer the question, “Where does our food come from?” We also have team members heavily involved in the Truckee Meadows Boys and Girls Club by being on the Young Leaders Committee, serving as mentors for at-risk youth and donating money to the organization monthly.

In addition, a Full Tilt team member is a founding member of the Mater Academy of Northern Nevada, a Charter School for at-risk youth.  We contribute to the MS Society, American Heart Association and Moms on the Run.  We volunteer at Thanksgiving to feed families at the Boys and Girls Club and provided a significant donation to the Jammies Drive which provides pajamas for babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  We have also donated thousands of dollars of office equipment to a local church.  This past year we organized a “diaper drive” for the Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston. We have already seen how hurricanes and other factors are affecting dedicated transportation, so it's significant that we were able to fill a 53-foot trailer and provide the transportation free of charge to those Texas children in need.

Freight logistics costs are on the rise across the nation. Here are several factors contributing to this recent surge.

Hurricanes Damage Infrastructure and Overburden Freight Logistics Companies

Freight LogisticsThe recent surge in hurricane activity in Houston, Florida, and Puerto Rico is damaging to supply chain infrastructure. Some areas received over 60 inches of rain, while destructive winds lead to massive flooding, loss of life and destruction. The flooding inundated hundreds of thousands of homes displaced more than 100,000 people and prompted thousands of rescues.

Oil refineries were also negatively affected. This is leading to a shortage of fuel and increased shipping and transportation prices across the United States. The hurricane season isn't over yet. This has lead industry insiders and experts to speculate on overall effects and market fluctuations.

FEMA Assistance Affects Freight Logistics

Freight LogisticsFollowing the devastation left by Gulf Coast hurricanes, FEMA stepped in and began offering aid and assistance to all affected areas. FEMA's need for equipment, goods and drop off locations resulted in logistical congestion. Full Tilt was amongst many logistics companies called on to truck goods and equipment into the affected areas. This caused FEMA to actually begin utilizing our own trailers.

Some are still waiting for assistance from FEMA and the federal government is still in possession of our trailers. We are working hard to recover our equipment. FEMA's use of our equipment is undoubtedly for a good cause; however, this does impact our business and the business of other dedicated transportation companies.

Carriers became aware of the need for additional trucks and equipment. As a result, some raised their rates by up to 30%. The high demands that the disaster areas placed on freight logistics companies resulted in a shortage of trucks and an overall increase in pricing across the country.

At Full Tilt, we kept our pricing at affordable levels. We choose not to take advantage of shipping rate hikes as a result of the devastation caused by the storms. We treat all parties fairly and with respect and value our long term business relationships. This is more important than capitalizing on a quick buck due to natural disasters. Our philosophy serves us well and contributes to our rapid growth as a company.

The Upcoming Holiday Season Places Stress on Freight Networks

Freight LogisticsAs we enter the fourth quarter of the year, the demand for dedicated transportation and trucking services are on the rise. It's the same story every year. However, this year (because of the economic recovery taking place) consumer confidence and associated spending is at an all-time high. As manufacturers are gearing up for what promises to be a robust Christmas season. The forecast is for increased need of dedicated transportation across the country. This places more demands on the freight logistics industry.

Carriers are gearing up for Q4. Right now there is a belief that this year's demand for logistics carriers will outpace supply. Again, the increased demand and limited supply will create upward pressure on delivery pricing. Reliable logistics companies like FULL TILT plan this kind of contingency and have an established network in place to ensure a  seamless transition between differing market conditions. We under promise, over deliver and at all times remain transparent with our customers.

Full Tilt Logistics is in the News! Again!

The recent buzz comes from Northern Nevada Business Weekly in an article that centers around innovation in Reno trucking companies "On the Road: Future of Trucking is Headed this Way."

An Innovator Amongst Reno Trucking Companies

In his article, Roger Diez identifies Full Tilt as an innovator amongst various other Reno trucking companies and cites their use of modern advancements in trucking including, Geotab from Telematics. Geotab is a freight management system that affords real-time logistics information. UPS and the Department of Defense both use the same software as the system provides electronic logging of driver hours for full accountability of transportation requirements.

Advancements in computer technology have not only added efficiencies in terms of tracking and logistics. Full Tilt's Volvo power units achieve much greater fuel efficiency. Over the past 10 years, Volvo has achieved drastic gains in fuel economy to the tune of an average of 5 to 6 miles per gallon to an average of 7.5 in their fleets.

This increase in efficiency is due to smaller displacement engines the use turbochargers and smart aerodynamics. Other details such as high-efficiency piston design, split injection fuel delivery systems, predictive shifting, and adaptive cruise control also contribute to better mileage.

The next step is the development of hybrid power units despite limited demand. Regardless, Full Tilt recognizes the importance of increased efficiency and looks to the future for continued innovation.

Growth and Expansion

Diez also notes Full Tilt's rise since their inception three years ago as well as our continuing growth and development. Currently, our staff at Full Tilt handles between 400 and 500 shipments per month. This increase in traffic has also necessitated the recent acquisition this June of three additional tractors and a total of six trailers. Our plan is to increase the fleet to between ten and fifteen units by the end of the year.

Full Tilt specializes in high-value freight and many of our clients are trade shows and companies in the solar industry and most recently we signed a contract with Amazon. Full Tilt looks to continue its commitment to fully utilizing the technological capabilities built into today's modern trucks to position itself as a key player amongst Reno logistics and Reno trucking companies.

Choosing the right logistics provider is imperative to keeping any goods-related business functioning efficiently. Finding the most cost-effective and reliable solution won’t just help you optimize your business, but will help you build strong partnerships that can last a lifetime. Finding the right Reno logistics provider is not as easy as it may seem. Here are a few tips to help you on your way.

Check The Company’s Capabilities

When choosing the right provider, the first thing you should pay attention to is the offered services. Can they help your business grow and develop? Are they competent in certain service areas? Do they have everything you need for both a short-term and long-term basis?

Ask About Their Customer Service and Safety Record

The logistics provider should have professional customer service with a high response rate and offer effective problem-solving. Reviews can be a good indicator of customer service.
All companies claim that they provide the best service but the only way to check is to ask for references. When checking the references, ask about the provider’s safety record. In most cases, a safe logistics provider also offers excellent customer service. The safety record can also be found at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Find Out If The Company Is Stable

No matter how complex your supply chain is, you need a Reno logistics provider with a good, stable company business. Since you are dependent on consistent suppliers, a logistics provider that undergoes unexpected and frequent changes can jeopardize your business. Make sure your Reno logistics provider is reliable and dependable by doing a background check. Any company with more than 3 years in business means valuable experience.

Investigate the Reputation

The company’s reputation is a major factor to consider when choosing the best Reno logistics provider.

Consider The Price

Beware of cheap logistics providers. If the services are too good to be true, that often is the case. It means the company could be saving money on transportation, warehousing, safety, or other aspects. This can lead to service failures and mishaps. Compare the prices on the market today and don’t go below the average.

Choosing the right logistics provider can make a difference between fast business development and unfortunate failures. Learn how Full Tilt Logistics can take care of your business today. Call us at 775.300.6050 or request an online quote.

Freight Carrier Partner

Full Tilt was founded by a third-generation Nevada native to address the poor levels of customer service he encountered daily in the four previous logistics companies he worked with.  Recognizing that larger companies viewed their customers as just another number, he vowed to start a company that would do better and treats every customer with the respect they deserve.

Relationships Built on Transparency

The freight carriers and supply chain business is based on relationships, right?  How many times have you heard that one?  Companies peddle their sales and marketing pitches all the time, but they never talk about communication, transparency, and trust.  Business relationships are essential for a strong partnership; however, these relationships must be developed.  Only when you establish a foundation of trust and transparency can a meaningful relationship be established.

Freight Carrier Partner

Our goal with our customers is always a win-win outcome.  Cultivating and nurturing strong relationships takes time and effort, but it pays off.  While price is important, working with a freight carrier provider you trust will reduce risk and the cost of doing business in the long term. We work hard for long term relationships.  A relationship is a two-way street and you get back what you put in.  See what our customers are saying at www.fulltiltlogistics.com.

New Customer Guarantee

To demonstrate our confidence in providing the highest level of customer service available and a fair price for our freight carriers services, we promise to do what we say or you pay nothing!  When a new customer books five loads with Full Tilt, if for any reason a load is not delivered on time that load is free!

Try and find any other company willing to do this.  Contact us to take advantage of this limited time offer.

Whew……what a few weeks it has been at Full Tilt Logistics! Besides working nonstop to service our ever-increasing customer base, several of our staff participated again in local fundraising events.

Our company culture encourages family time and a healthy active lifestyle.

These recent events accomplish both. We believe that staying physically active and giving back to the community benefits all. Many of our employees are ex-athletes, so the competitive spirit is alive and well at Full Tilt. Interested in joining our team? Check out our current openings!

Full Tilt at the Multiple Sclerosis Walk

The first event was the MS Walk benefitting the Multiple Sclerosis Society. This event has been ongoing since 1988 and has raised more than $920 million to drive groundbreaking research, provide life-changing programs and show community support for those who need it most. The Full Tilt team of employees personally contributed to the cause and solicited donations from customers, vendors, friends, and family for this worthy event. We were happy to raise such a significant amount and contribute to this wonderful cause.

Moms on The Run

Full Tilt Logistics

Next up was the 17th annual Moms on The Run 10K and 5K event held every Mother’s Day along the beautiful Truckee River in downtown Reno. This all-volunteer event contributes 98% of the funds raised to local breast cancer patients undergoing treatment in the Reno community. Again, members of the Full Tilt team participated with friends and family to support this great cause. Several employees are avid runners and improved their times from last year's event.

Reno Tahoe Odyssey

Full Tilt Logistics

The grueling Reno Tahoe Odyssey (RTO) is next on the schedule for the Full Tilt team. Only our most competitive runners will be participating due to the demanding requirements. The RTO is a relay from Reno to Lake Tahoe and back to Reno making a large 178-mile loop around the spectacular route showcasing the beautiful Reno-Tahoe region. Our competing runners will all be running three legs of the race averaging 15 miles each. The same dedication and drive to compete in this event are what we bring to the table to ensure our customers receive the highest level of customer service available.

Urban Roots Farm Camp

Full Tilt Logistics

On a more serene note, Full Tilt Logistics stepped up to sponsor a school garden and Urban Roots Farm Camp for local youth. Urban Roots is a local organization founded on supporting school gardens. The Garden Classroom Program helps schools create gardens that serve as outdoor classrooms. Teacher training, classroom lessons and field trips with hands-on learning. Urban Roots has introduced thousands of children across Washoe County to the joys of leafy greens while also incorporating science, math, and art in the garden. The Farm Camp for kids provides an immersive experience to get in the flow of fun, friends, and farming while learning about everything from chickens and seed balls to permaculture and compost. It is always rewarding for our team to see how much the kids love the program!
